Dominican Republic Embassy Recognized by PCA for Their Support of the Cigar Industry

The Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the US is Recognized by the Premium Cigar Association of America (PCA) for Their Support of the Cigar Industry”

The Premium Cigar Association of America (PCA) acknowledged the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States for their efforts in favor of the cigar industry against the US government and promotion of the product in the US market during 2022.

Scott Pearce, CEO of the PCA, highlighted the support of the Dominican representation against several regulatory measures that threatened the stability of the industry. “We thank the embassy for their commitment to defending retailers, manufacturers, and consumers of premium cigars locally, statewide, and federally,” he said.

Ambassador Sonia Guzmán emphasized that cigars are a “political, economic, and social stability engine for the Dominican Republic.” This is why President Luis Abinader has spared no effort in promoting such an important sector, from the cultivation of tobacco to the export of our outstanding cigars. We thank PCA for this recognition, which is a testament to the strong bond between our countries and the work we do with the private sector.”

Official figures from the United States indicate that exports of Dominican cigars to the US market reached $1 billion for the second consecutive year, representing 90% of our total global exports, said Leonel Mateo Hernández, head of economic and commercial affairs of the diplomatic mission.

The event also recognized the work of Pennsylvania Congressman Dan Meuser, who is the president of the Congressional Tobacco Caucus. Other lawmakers were present, including Darrell Issa of California, Byron Donalds of Florida, Chuck Edwards of North Carolina, and David Rouzer of North Carolina, representatives of the private sector, as well as Emilia Conde, an advisor in charge of congressional affairs at the embassy.

The Premium Cigar Association of America (PCA) was founded in 1933 and is the oldest and most important trade association in the representation of the interests of premium tobacco product retailers, manufacturers, and suppliers in the United States.
