Ronny Mauricio Named Most Valuable Player in Dominican Winter Baseball Championship

Santo Domingo,- The star shortstop of the Tigres del Licey, Ronny Mauricio, was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the Dominican winter baseball championship.

Mauricio was the main man in the Tigers’ offense in the regular season, which earned him the official award given by the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic (Lidom).

To win the distinction, Mauricio, 21, beat out Cuban first baseman Henry Urrutia of the Cibao Giants, outfielder Aneurys Tavárez of the Cibaeñas Eagles and first baseman Rayner Núñez of the Eastern Stars.

According to Lidom, Mauricio will receive an all-terrain vehicle for winning the award.

The star shortstop, who belongs to the New York Mets in Major League Baseball, played in 47 of the 50 games on the Blue’s regular season schedule.

Mauricio batted an average of .287, leading the tournament in hits (54), doubles (15), home runs (7) and runs batted in (31).

The switch-hitter also finished second in runs scored (26) and stolen bases (11), adding two triples.

One of the most notable aspects of Mauricio’s game was the timeliness of his bat, achieving an average of .333 with runners in scoring position, and also driving in 15 runs after two outs, when it was essential to connect with a hit to produce.

Mauricio’s contribution, who remained in the second and third spot in the batting order, was crucial for the Tigers to finish the regular season with the best record among the six teams participating in the championship, tying the all-time victory mark in a 50-game campaign of 34-16, shared with the East Bulls (2019-20).
