President Abinader Assigns Additional $2 Billion to Central Electoral Board Budget

Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader has allocated an additional 2 billion pesos to the budget of the Central Electoral Board for 2023.

At the end of a meeting between Abinader and the members of the plenary of the JCE, the spokesman for the Presidency, Homero Figueroa, announced that the President also said that he will seek consensus for the approval in the shortest possible time of the Electoral Regime and Political Parties laws.

Figueroa explained that “this decision reinforces the commitment assumed by President Abinader’s management to strengthen democratic institutionalism.” And in that sense he assured that “the holding of elections is not at risk.”

For his part, Román Jáquez Liranzo, president of the JCE, detailed that of the 2 billion pesos in additional funds, 1.5 billion will be used for the management of electoral processes, such as procurement, contracting and acquisitions for the primaries and the 2024 elections. Another 500 million will be credited to compensate for the deficit in 2022.

The meeting also included the full members of the Junta, Rafael Armando Vallejo Santelises, Dolores Altagracia Fernández Sánchez, Samir Rafael Chami Isa and the legal consultant of the Executive Power, Antoliano Peralta.
