Alert in NY: Luis Abinader Plans to Privatize Consular Services

New York, United State. – Senator Iván Lorenzo of the Dominican Republic warned here that President Luis Abinader intends to privatize consular services.

Lorenzo, who was invited by “Prensa & Comunidad Hispana” (PreCoHis) to participate and be recognized during their Christmas encounter held last weekend in Upper Manhattan, stated that he has submitted an initiative to modify the obsolete 1944 law 716 on the public functions of Dominican Consulates.

“I want to call on the Dominican community abroad to remain alert and defend this ‘attempt to privatize’ in any scenario and by any means,” Lorenzo said to dozens of special guests (elected officials, businessmen, politicians, professionals, journalists, and community members) present at the event.

“If we allow the government to do so, consular services will become more expensive, and we would also open the space for it to ‘fideicomise’ our national symbols later,” he declared.

“It is a demand, the only thing we can offer the diaspora, which makes so much sacrifice for the Dominican people, is to modify this law, because it is not possible that in the 21st century a Dominican is paying in NY four times what a service is worth in the RD, just to enrich political activists,” he said.

He remembered that on one occasion, Milagros Ortiz Bosch said that the government would not be a prey for Perremeísta leaders, “however, we have begged to approve this law, to remove the prey that Dominican politicians have.”

“We are talking about a consul who can enrich his account monthly with more than a million dollars at the expense of the sacrifice of the Dominicans,” the senator said. Congressman Adriano Espaillat, who was late for the activity due to his duties, exchanged opinions on aspects of the community by phone with Senator Lorenzo, who had gone to New Jersey to fulfill community and family commitments.

In addition to Lorenzo, PreCoHis also recognized the well-known Dominican sports journalist, Héctor García, for his 53 years in communication and for his approaches, comments, and sports analyses that reach Dominicans abroad because sports are one of the things we follow most here and there.

García, upon thanking, valued the Quisqueyana community, saying: “I had the honor of representing El Nacional newspaper in 1984-85 in NY, I know the struggle, the Dominican life, the value that this extraordinary community has, it must be the best of all of us who have come to serve and seek this American dream.”

“I trust this community a lot, I don’t let myself be carried away by little things that involve Dominicans, because we have a lot of value, we have contributed and will continue to contribute to the development of this great nation,” he said.

For his part, Assemblyman for The Bronx, George Álvarez, upon presenting the recognition to García, said: “It is a pride for us to be here seeing this type of recognition given to people who have truly contributed to our community.”

The event was held at the 809 restaurant (La Casa Dominicana), located in Upper Manhattan, with a buffet, whiskey, wines, beers, and soft drinks.
